Studying at Mansfield

  • PPE is a strong and well-established subject at Mansfield.
  • Eight undergraduates join us each year.

You’ll develop your expertise in the subjects covered by Philosophy, Politics & Economics (PPE), engaging your critical faculties in understanding their social environment. You’ll be encouraged to ask the kind of questions that cast light on the different worlds we inhabit.

Teaching and learning

PPE at Oxford is a very flexible course. You’re required to study all three subjects in equal proportions in your first year, but after that you can continue with all three branches, or specialise in two. For each branch there are some core paper requirements, but after that choices may be made from a wide-ranging set of options.

In the first year you’ll prepare for three exams – one in each subject. The Philosophy component consists of logic, general philosophy, and an introduction to moral philosophy – based on J. S. Mill’s Utilitarianism. In Politics, students are introduced to Political Theory and Political Institutions. In Economics, you’ll study microeconomics, macroeconomics, and statistics.

Our graduates go on to work in areas such as the civil service, local government, the media, finance and banking, teaching, law and academia.

"I chose Mansfield because of its reputation for being friendly and progressive. I was really attracted to Mansfield’s history as a non-conformist college and I knew that if I was going to apply to Oxford, I would want to apply to somewhere that was a bit different to the other colleges. I did also look at more practical things like location and student accommodation. I liked that Mansfield was central without being on a main road, and that students would have accommodation for all three years."

How to apply

There are no specific A-levels (or equivalent qualifications) on which we insist as a condition for studying PPE – although Maths is recommended. We are looking for critical, clear and reasoned thinking, as well as real enthusiasm for the subjects on offer.

An Isolation Conversation with Eileen Tipoe

‘The small Micronesian island of Yap is both geographically and economically isolated. Around two centuries ago the Yapese developed an innovative exchange system that comes surprisingly close to how money is used today.’
