Food and Drink

The College Dining Hall

Mansfield has some of the best food in the University, and at reasonable prices. Although there’s no obligation to eat in the College Dining Hall, students are encouraged to do so. Lunch and dinner are served in the Dining Hall and most meals are cafeteria style.

‘Nullius boni sine socio iucunda possessio est’

It’s on the shield of our College logo and you’ll hear this said before every Formal Hall – it means ‘No good thing is truly joyful unless it is shared’.

"Mansfield was recently voted the best college for Vegetarian food, which I particularly appreciate! There are usually two meat options and two Veggie options (with one of those being Vegan; where this is not the case, the chef will happily prepare you a Vegan meal upon request). The pasta bakes slap, and the catering staff are always lovely. The Crypt (our college café) is the perfect blend of independent study, chatting to friends, and it’s also great for group work. You can buy snacks, sandwiches, baked goods (cookies, chocolate twists, cake), drinks (smoothies, coffees, cans) for much cheaper than other cafés using your Bod card."

Lunch and dinner

Lunch and dinner at Mansfield are £4.75 each. We pride ourselves on the quality of our catering, enjoyed by students and staff alike. Most meals are cooked from fresh ingredients, locally sourced from high animal welfare suppliers.

The Crypt Café

The Crypt is Mansfield’s bar and café, serving food during the day.

It’s also a relaxed place to work. The Crypt hosts College events such as student-run open mic nights, pub quizzes and film socials.

Best in Class

Mansfield has twice been voted the best college for vegetarian food in the University.

The twice-weekly formal second sitting of dinner – Formal Hall – is very popular and there are regular special dinners such as a Thanksgiving dinner and a Burns Night supper.

There are also kitchens on-site for students who prefer to cook for themselves.

"Mansfield’s food has got to be some of the best at Oxford (from experience!). There’s always at least three choices for every meal, including really diverse vegetarian options, and breakfasts in the Crypt Café definitely get me out of bed in the morning!"
