Financial Support

The Sarah & Peter Harkness Prize (£100) is awarded for the best Distinction-level performance in the first public examinations (Prelims/Mods), based on rankings within the class, by a Mansfield student who lives and completed 6th form studies in Yorkshire or the North East.

The Sarah & Peter Harkness bursary will be awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student who lives and completed 6th form studies in Yorkshire or the North East. They’ll be awarded £1,000 in their first year, and £500 in each subsequent year of study.

This award will be paid for as long as the student has fee-liability at the University. The recipient must be in good academic standing with the College, and not be the subject of any disciplinary procedures.

The Harkness Bursary and Harkness Prize are awarded to students from Yorkshire or the North East because students from these areas are underrepresented at Oxford.

You’re invited to enter the College Essay Prize (£100), submitting your title for approval to the College Office by Friday of Week 8 of Hilary Term, and submitting your completed essay to the College Office by Friday of Week 5 of Trinity Term. The Principal will judge the prize.

Preference will be given to essays specifically written for the College Essay Prize, but sections of dissertations for Schools may also be submitted. You should state whether or not your essay has been written specifically for the prize. The essay has a word limit of between 2,000-5,000 words.

A winner will be approved in Week 8 of Trinity Term, and a copy of the winning essay will be deposited in the College Library.

One prize (£50) is awarded per year for outstanding academic performance.

The Andrew Olive Prize in Economics (£250) is awarded to the student who achieves the best Prelims or second-year performance in Economics.

The Kwabena Osei-Boateng Engineering Science Prize (£200) is awarded for the best performance in Engineering Science Prelims.

Three Mason Lowance Prizes are granted:

• In memory of Malcolm Parkes, for the best performance in Mods (£150)
• In honour of John Creaser, for the best performance in English language and/or literature second year work (£150)
• In memory of Stephen Wall, for the best performance in Finals (£150)

The Henty Prize (£50) is awarded for the best second-year academic performance. The Henty Travel Bursary is awarded for ambitious or unusual travel.

The Geography Dissertation Travel Fund makes awards to geographers undertaking dissertations outside Britain.

The Mahony Prize (£50) is awarded for the most commendable performance by a second-year historian.

The Worsley Prize (£100) is awarded to a student who, in the opinion of the Fellows in Law, has managed to combine a high level of academic performance with an outstanding contribution to College life.

A prize of £100 has been given in the name of John Sykes, Emeritus Fellow in Materials Science, to reward to reward excellent performance in Part I.

The Bob Coates Prize (£150) is awarded for academic achievement in Mathematics, based on performance in Part A or Part B of the final examinations in Mathematics and in Mathematics & Statistics.

The Adam Monk Scholarship (£150) is awarded to the student who achieves the best Distinction in Prelims for Maths or Maths and Statistics.

The Horton Davies Prize (£200) is awarded for the most commendable performance by a second-year Theologian.

The Lynda Patterson Prize (£100) is awarded to a student of Theology & Religion or Philosophy & Theology to recognise outstanding performance in Prelims.

The Grenader Family Prize is awarded each term for the best academic performance (£50). A prize of £100 is awarded at the end of each academic year for the best overall academic performance during the year.
