Shukria is originally from Afghanistan but has been living in Oxford with her family since 2011. She is a recent graduate of BA PPE and MSc Human Rights & Politics. She also writes poetry and has recently launched her own poetry blog which you can find here. She began her writing journey with the writer Kate Clanchy, who is now Mansfield’s Writer in Residence.

“The best part of being in comms at Mansfield is having access to all the social media accounts through which I engage with a lot of students by posting and seeing what Mansfield community is up to. It’s because of this and the welcoming community at Mansfield that I am so happy to be a part of.”

Tea or Coffee?

As I am from Afghanistan – we are tea people. So, I do drink more tea than coffee, but I do love iced latte especially from Starbucks!

What are you reading right now?

I have just read Forty Rules of Love by Elif Shafak which I’ve absolutely loved! It’s about my favourite 13th century poet, Rumi and his spiritual companion Shams of Tabriz.

What’s your favourite place in Oxford?

I have recently discovered the Magdalen Deer Park and I absolutely love a stroll around there. Before this, my favourite place was Christ Church meadow.

Twitter or Instagram?

I personally have been more active on Twitter recently. The people who I engage with on twitter are mostly academics, journalists and activists so I definitely prefer the content from Twitter. But I like Mansfield Instagram page as its where students are most engaged with the college.

Netflix or YouTube?

Definitely Netflix! But I find how-to-do videos on YouTube very helpful.
