As Associate Professor in late medieval history, Dr Helen Lacey’s research focuses on later medieval political culture; her current research on the English Rising of 1381 can be seen here.

Principal Helen Mountfield KC said:

“The whole Mansfield academic community is absolutely delighted with the appointment of Dr Helen Lacey as Senior Tutor with effect from October 2024.  She will succeed Lucinda Rumsey, who has been outstanding in the role for 16 years. Helen is a long-serving and well-loved history Fellow who served as Acting Senior Tutor during Lucinda’s leave while she was Senior Proctor of the University in 2021-2022, so I already know that I will enjoy working with her.

“Helen brings warmth, professionalism and significant tutorial experience to the role, as well as a deep commitment to student education and Mansfield’s proud ethos of access and inclusion.  She is also a highly regarded medieval historian. Her current AHRC funded research project on the English Rising concerns how citizens communicated their concerns to the powers-that-be; I am sure this will inform her approach to any tricky student interactions which may come her way in her role as Senior Tutor!”

“I am excited to take on this role and work closely with Mansfield’s staff and students. In particular, I look forward to continuing the access and outreach agenda which Lucinda Rumsey pioneered. Mansfield excels at championing widening participation, and this makes it a special place to work.”
