Congratulations to Mansfield’s Honorary Fellow and former Principal, Baroness Helena Kennedy of the Shaws, KC, FRSA, HonFRSE who has been appointed by His Majesty The King to the greatest order of chivalry in Scotland.

The Order of the Thistle, revived by King James VII in 1687, is the Most Ancient and Most Noble order, which recognises sixteen Knights and Ladies.

About Baroness Helena Kennedy of the Shaws, KC, FRSA, HonFRSE

Baroness Kennedy is a Scottish Barrister, broadcaster, and Labour member of the house of Lords. She was the Principal of Mansfield College from 2011 to 2018. Baroness Kennedy was also the first Chancellor of Oxford Brookes University, from 1994 – 2001.

She is recipient of 42 honorary degrees from various institutions around the world, in recognition of her work on women, human rights, and widening access to higher education.

Baroness Kennedy has spent her professional life giving voice to those who have least power within the system, championing civil liberties and promoting human rights.
