Mansfield Alumnus’ latest publication
Mansfield Alumnus, the Revd Dr Peter Jupp (Theology, 1966), an honorary Fellow of University of Edinburgh publishes Cremation in Modern Scotland (2017).
Alongside Douglas Davies (Durham University), Hilary Grainger (University of the Arts, London), Gordon Raeburn (Melbourne University) and Stephen White, (formerly Cardiff Law School), Peter Jupp publishes his latest work exploring death culture in modern Scottish Society.
Cremation in Modern Scotland (2017) explores how changes in funeral practice provide a window into changes in wider social identity, values and religious beliefs. This book reveals how, in Scotland, as in other societies, death ways and funeral arrangements are closely related to other aspects of life, from religious beliefs to political convictions, from family relationships to class structure, from poverty to prosperity.
Cremation in Modern Scotland (2017) is preceded by Death in Modern Scotland, 1855-1955: Beliefs, Attitudes and Practices (2016) which he co-wrote with Susan Buckham (University of Sterling) and Julie Rugg (University of York).
