Looking to the Future
“The world is enriched through diversity of thought leadership, and this is best achieved when the most intellectually able are identified early and educated to realise their potential.”
Principal Helen Mountfield QC
Mansfield aims to become a model for access to higher education, and how social and intellectual diversity enriches thought, in the UK and across the world.
We seek to highlight and tackle the injustices that prevent exceptional people, who may have different backgrounds and experiences, achieving their educational and life goals and contributing to the world.
The Covid crisis is drawing attention to disparities in educational opportunity – in the UK, and globally.
We believe it is critical that people with different experiences are represented at the highest levels in politics, industry and society.
This can only be achieved by elite higher education institutions doing more to offer opportunities to students with potential from a wide section of society, and supporting them as they build intellectual curiosity, self-confidence and self-belief.
For two decades, Mansfield has led the way in reaching students with potential and giving them a chance at Oxford.
These pages show how, working with Oxford University, Mansfield laid the foundations for fair access to Oxford; set a bold target on access 20 years ago, and - by smashing it - has led the way for the other Oxford colleges.
Our goal now is to strengthen our position so we can do more to break down barriers to excellent applicants, students and researchers, setting and reaching ambitious life goals.
We exist to educate, equip, and empower our students.
Mansfield is an academic community which sustains, protects and promotes intellectual and social openness, diversity and excellence in scholarship, and the preservation and development of knowledge, ideas and expertise.
Our goal now is to build on and strengthen Mansfield’s ability to attract and retain world-leading academics, helping us retain our high ranking within the world’s leading university.
In 2020, we will unveil our ambitious vision for the next stage in Mansfield’s future, setting out how, over the next 20 years, we will extend our strategy to support potential applicants, our students, graduates, and academics.

"Oxford University, which has been widely recognised for many years as one of the greatest universities in the world, is wholeheartedly dedicated to providing the highest quality education to all who are able to benefit from it. This enables them to make a major contribution to wider society wherever they choose to make their future careers.
Mansfield College has itself always been at the cutting edge of these efforts. It helps to make sure that the University is open to talent, regardless of the background of those who seek to study in Oxford.
Mansfield and the wider University are determined to play a strong role in promoting social cohesion and mobility, giving the maximum opportunity to students from every social or ethnic background. The College has shown great determination and commitment to giving a helping hand to those who may have had a difficult struggle in order to meet the highest academic standards."

"When my wife Julia and I decided to work with and support Mansfield back in 1999 we knew that the college had to have a target to aim for that would set it apart from all other colleges. We felt it was critical that access to the very best higher education was available to as wide a social group as possible and setting a minimum target of 75% state school entry was we felt something very worthwhile to aim at. The Access to Excellence campaign has achieved way more than that. We are incredibly proud of all the work that has been done over the past twenty years, resulting in Mansfield having the highest proportion of UK undergraduates from state schools at Oxford. As an entrepreneur and business leader, I believe that we must have a diverse student population to ensure the business world is equally diverse; it’s only then that we will have the very best ideas, the greatest innovations, and the most workable solutions for society."
