Philosophy

Course Tutors

Mansfield offers around 10 places a year to students who will take courses in Philosophy, which, at Oxford, must always be studied in combination with at least one other subject.

Philosophy has been studied at Oxford as long as there has been a university here and the University Faculty is one of the largest and most distinguished in the world, with over 70 full-time members.

At Mansfield our largest contingent of students read for the BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE). However, we also have regular intakes in Philosophy and Theology and Mathematics and Philosophy. We strongly encourage and warmly welcome applications from candidates in all these subjects.

Although no formal study of Philosophy is required before students come to Oxford, the subject is a demanding one and requires a high level of commitment. The Philosophy component of each of the joint degrees is slightly different. However, there are core topics that are common and each course requires students to develop analytical skills and the ability to defend their views through rigorous argument. It is the development of these skills that makes graduates who have studied philosophy successful in a wide range of careers. Details of specific course requirements can be found by looking at the pages for PPE, Philosophy and Theology, and Maths and Philosophy.
