Undergraduates

Scholarships (£200 pa) and Exhibitions (£150 pa) are awarded annually to undergraduates, either for an outstanding performance in their first-year University examinations or for exceptional work during the year.

The College holds an annual Scholars' and Exhibitioners' dinner in Hilary Term.

Proctor Travel Scholarship for Study Abroad
The purpose of the Proctor Travel Scholarship is to enable members of the College to continue their studies abroad.

Applicants should firstly consult the Principal (please make an appointment via the Principal's PA- jane.buswell@mansfield.ox.ac.uk), and upon her agreement make a formal application, which should contain the full details of the proposed course of study and estimated costs. This should be sent to the Academic Administrator no later that the last day of Hilary Term. Please note there is no formal application form.

Nathan Whitley Travelling Scholarship
These Scholarships are intended to help members of the College to travel abroad in countries which have some connection with the roots of our culture.

It is laid down in the Deed of Gift that in making the awards, preference shall be given:
a)    to those students who have been most diligent in their studies;
b)    to those students who are likely to derive the greatest benefit from the opportunity thus afforded;
c)    other things being equal, to those students who of their own means would be least likely to afford such a trip.

For both the Nathan Whitley and Proctor Travel Scholarships, applications will only be considered once applicants have consulted the Principal and obtained her agreement.

Sarah & Peter Harkness Prize  (£100 pa)
A £100 Prize for best Distinction-level performance in the first public examinations, based on rankings within the class, by a Mansfield student living and having completed 6th form studies in Yorkshire or the North East.

Sarah & Peter Harkness Bursary (£250 pa)

This award will be made to one student living and having completed 6th form studies in Yorkshire or the North East, who is studying for an undergraduate or graduate degree at Mansfield. This award will be paid for as long as the student has fee-liability at the University.

The recipient must be in good academic standing with the College and not be the subject of any disciplinary procedures.

Annual Essay Prize
Applications are invited for the College Essay Prize (formerly Arts Essay Prize),  currently valued at £100.

Subjects are to be submitted to the Principal for her approval by Friday of 8th Week of Hilary Term (please make an appointment via the Principal's PA- jane.buswell@mansfield.ox.ac.uk), and completed essays are to be with the Academic Administrator by Friday of 5th Week of Trinity Term.

Preference will be given to essays specifically written for the College Essay Prize but dissertations for Schools may also be submitted.

The essay will have a word limit of between 5,000-15,000 words.

Principal's Prize
One prize is awarded per year for Improved Academic Performance. (£40)

Geography
Travel Scholarships and Prizes
There is one Henty Prize awarded for outstanding performance in the second year. The Henty Travel Scholarship is awarded for ambitious or unusual travel. The Geography Dissertation Travel Fund makes awards to geographers undertaking dissertations outside Britain.
 
Law
The Worsley Prize is awarded to the law student who combines academic performance with outstanding contribution to College life. (£50)
 
History
The Mahony Prize is awarded to the most improved historian in the second year. (£50)
 
Theology
The Horton Davies Prize is awarded for outstanding performance in the second year for church or modern history.
 
English
Two Mason Lowance Prizes are granted for outstanding performance in the second year of the Honours School of English and for the best first class performance in Finals. 

Graduates

Elfan Rees Scholarship

2009 Award of Elfan Rees Scholarship to be made in Theology in association with the Theology Faculty tenable only at Mansfield College.

The College awards a scholarship once in every four years, tenable for two years, in memory of Dr. Elfan Rees. Dr. Rees was Adviser on Refugee Affairs to the World Council of Churches on International Affairs, and was Dale Lecturer at Mansfield College 1974-75.

The Scholarship is open to men and women commencing studies towards a higher degree in the field of Theology. Approved courses include the M.Phil., M.Litt., or D.Phil in any branch of Theology. Please refer to the Theology website for instructions on how to apply.

Applications are conditional upon candidates' acceptance by the Theology Faculty Board and transfer to Mansfield college if you are not already a member. Graduates wishing to read for Honour Schools in these subjects may also apply. The annual value of the Scholarship is £3,000 maintenance plus college fee waiver (approx £2000) with matching faculty award (up to £5000) for up to two years within fee liability.

 
Adam Von Trott Scholarship

The College proposes, jointly with the Department of Politics and International Relations, to award a scholarship tenable at Mansfield College for two years from 1 October 2010, in memory of Adam von Trott.  Adam von Trott zu Solz was a central figure in the group around Graf von Stauffenberg conspiring to kill Hitler and was put to death by the Nazi regime in Germany on 26 August 1944.  He was trained as a lawyer, and during his university course at the University of Göttingen he spent a term at Mansfield College in 1929. 

The Scholarship will be awarded to a German national accepted to read for the two year MPhil degree in Politics (European Politics & Society; Theory of Politics; Comparative Government) or in International Relations.  The award will be made up by contributions from the Adam von Trott memorial fund, the Politics Department and Mansfield College up to the value of the full EU fee and advised maintenance (the current value is £14,500).  In addition Mansfield will provide two years’ college accommodation at standard charges which will be covered by this maintenance allowance.  There will be a further scholarship from 1 October 2012.

Visiting Students

A prize is awarded each term for the best academic performance (£50).  A prize of £100 is awarded at the end of each academic year for the best overall academic performace during the year.
