Graduation

Finalists are not automatically entered for a degree day. It is your responsibility to book a place at a graduation ceremony.

Please be aware that ceremonies are usually booked up well in advance, particularly those held during the summer, and places are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.  You should check with the Access and Admissions Administrator that the date is available and in any event give an alternative date on the booking form. If a ceremony is fully booked, degrees may be taken in absentia only. However, if you wish to be put on a reserve list for a particular ceremony, please note this on your booking form.

Degree ceremonies in 2012 will be held in the Sheldonian Theatre. All ceremonies will take place at 2.30pm except for the additional ceremonies on Friday 4th May and Saturday 12th May, which take place at 11.00am (see notes below):

ADDITIONAL CEREMONIES

The Degree Conferrals Office have recently added some extra graduation dates for 2012 and 2013 in an attempt to offer colleges additional places where their current quotas are insufficient, and to provide opportunities for old members to graduate who have not yet done so.

Places for these additional ceremonies will be confirmed on a first-come first-served basis. If you would like to book a place at one of these additional ceremonies, please complete a Degree Day Booking Form, stating which date you would prefer. I will then confirm with you whether a place is available.

For all of the additional ceremonies, each graduand will be eligible for three guest tickets.

The additional ceremonies taking place on the 4th May, 12 May and 22nd June will begin at 11am. All others will start at 2.30pm.

NEW GRADUATION SYSTEM FROM JUNE 2013

Undergraduate and postgraduate taught students who complete their course and receive their examination results after June 2013 will be assigned a date for their degree ceremony at the start of Michaelmas term of their final year.

For example, if your course finishes in June, July or September 2013, you will be assigned a date in October 2012 for your degree ceremony in 2013 or 2014 so that you have plenty of time to make arrangements.

Research students who are granted leave to supplicate after June 2013 will be offered dates for their degree ceremony once they have been granted leave to supplicate.

PROCEDURE FOR BOOKING A DEGREE DAY

To book a place at one of the degree days in 2011 or 2012, candidates should complete the Degree Day Booking Form and return it to the Access and Admissions  Administrator (in the College Office) giving at least three weeks notice and:
(a) pay all Battels, if any
(b) pay Degree fees of the College and the University
(c) return all College and University Library books

Bookings cannot be made until full payment has been received. Current students with outstanding battels should ensure that graduation payments are made separately, and that all outstanding debts are paid, and all College and University Library books returned, at least one month before the ceremony.

Degree day brochures can be seen online here:

DRESS AND GOWNS

We have been asked to draw the attention of graduands to the importance of the correct form of dress.  It is Sub fusc the same as that required for examinations and must be strictly adhered to. Candidates who are not correctly dressed will be excluded from the ceremony; in such circumstances the excluded candidate can proceed to the degree in absence.

It is the responsibility of each graduand to hire the correct gown and hood.  A list of suppliers is provided below. If the ceremony is taking place at the Sheldonian, you should arrive at the ceremony wearing the gown appropriate to your present status (eg commoner’s, scholar’s, BA, senior student’s) and change into the relevant degree gown during the ceremony. If the ceremony is taking place at Examination Schools, you should arrive at the ceremony in the gown and hood of the degree you are to have conferred.

GUEST TICKETS

Each graduand is allocated a maximum of three tickets to the ceremony by the University unless otherwise specified (see schedule of dates above). For ceremony dates marked by an asterisk, graduands are allocated a maximum of two tickets. Children must have tickets and those under seven are not permitted to attend. Without tickets your guests will not be able to attend the ceremony.

DEGREE CERTIFICATES

Only those whose degrees have been conferred at a degree ceremony either in person or absentia may receive a degree certificate, although a pre-graduation certificate is available for those who have passed their final exams but have not yet attended a ceremony.  Graduands should note that certificates are now issued automatically and will be presented to you on the day of the ceremony by the Dean of Degrees. If you graduate in absentia we will forward your certificate to you so please ensure that you provide us with a current address.

THE OXFORD MASTER OF ARTS

If you have completed a BA you will be eligible to take an MA in or after the 21st term since you matriculated (i.e. seven years after matriculation). This is not an automatic process and to obtain your MA you must apply to graduate at a degree ceremony (either in person or in absentia). You must have had your BA conferred in order to take your MA. You should book for a Degree Day by completing the usual booking form. Please note that there is a £10 fee.
