Mansfield Association Dinner
Friday 26th June, 2009, 6:45pm for 7:30pm
Members of the Mansfield Association and their guests, tutors, and current students and their guests, were invited to the annual Mansfield Association Dinner.
Speaker: Professor Jocelyn Bell Burnell
Currently Visiting Professor of Astrophysics at Oxford University and Fellow of Mansfield College following a distinguished academic career for which she was awarded a DBE in 2007, Prof Bell is undoubtedly one of the world's great scientists. She is also a prominent Quaker, having held important roles in the Society of Friends, both locally and nationally. Mansfield has had a long and distinguished record of combining the training of ordinands for the ministry with non-theologs reading in the arts and sciences. Unfortunately, times have moved on and 2009 marks the end of ordinand training at Mansfield. So the Committee thought it would be particularly appropriate to have as its Annual Dinner speaker in 2009 someone who exemplified that spanning of theology and the arts/sciences. There can be nobody more eminently qualified than Professor Bell-Burnell, one of Mansfield's own Fellows.
