Since starting at Mansfield in February, I have met many of the College’s alumni and friends, listened to their thoughts and views on Mansfield in the past, present and future, and it is wonderful to see how many people care deeply about the College and recognise what a significant impact it has made on their lives and the careers they have chosen. I would like to thank all those who have taken the time to talk to me about Mansfield and to give me a real sense of the College ethos, and I look forward to meeting many more of you in the months to come.
My focus in the coming months is twofold. Firstly to ensure we are in touch with our alumni, seeking your thoughts and views, inviting you to events, communicating on a regular basis and ultimately ensuring Mansfield stays part of your lives despite leaving your studies behind. I have found it immensely enjoyable to make contact with some alumni of the College who have not had contact for over 15 years – the power of the internet is endless and has given me the opportunity to track down some people we had lost touch with.
The second objective is to continue the excellent fundraising efforts by my predecessors and move us nearer to the £2.8 million target of the 125th anniversary campaign. We are now at £1.3m so we still have some way to go, but if we encourage a higher participation rate from our alumni base we can reach this. More recent graduates are beginning to support the College on a regular basis, some starting at the £5 level and others feeling able to join at one of the 125th “Supporter†and “Friend†levels, and any level of support makes a difference. I am all too aware now of where Mansfield sits financially compared to other Colleges and we have a huge challenge in the years ahead, but with an alumni base with such deep affection for the College I am confident we can meet these. To those of you who are supporting the College may I please use this as an opportunity to thank you for your continued support and loyalty.
